Mass 48. Thursday 25 December 2025

Christmas Day

I’ve always liked repeats. If they stopped making films and television shows I’d be happy with what has already been made.

Perhaps that explains why I turned up for a repeat service.

No, it was purely down to freshman ignorance.

They teach you a lot in RCIA but not the mechanics of Christmas or which Mass you need to attend. Now I understood why the Christmas Eve service was so busy.

Obviously that had been the vigil service. It was packed out because I imagine most people, especially parents, would rather not have to get themselves or their family to church on Christmas morning.

I on the other hand went anyway. It was the first time I’d been to church on Christmas Day, and I quite liked the idea.

So even though Canon P apologised that the homily would be the same as that given the night before, I sat and enjoyed it all. It was nice to have the carols again. Just the piano and flute this time, played by a woman and her daughter, which was delightful.

What’s more the lack of people meant I got to help with the collection. Asked by S who hands out the mass books.

“You’re fully fledged,” she said with a smile. I said I’d proudly report this back to my wife.

Home to open gifts slightly later than expected. But cheerful, and enjoying a blessed Christmas.
