Mass 78. Back on the road to Emmaus

I was distracted during Mass by work, football, sorting myself out, being better, getting things done and stopping my mind from operating at 100mph.

I stumbled on prayers. I even fluffed the Apostles’ Creed, which I consider an easy one.

Overall, I had a feeling of needing to try harder.

The gospel was one of my favourites. The Road to Emmaus. It’s full of things you can analyse, but my favourite detail is the urgency that the previously cautious disciples forgo their own warnings, and rush back to Jerusalem.

But I didn’t think much of that. I thought more of how they had been on the wrong road. They’d been walking away from Christ. And you can’t read that without asking yourself if you’re guilty of doing the same.

We’re all sometimes on the wrong path. Walking away from Christ, not towards him. Today felt like one of those days. And right on time, the gospel provided me with this reminder.

I had to turn down tickets to the Barn Dance on the way out. That seemed like a road I was more comfortable with.
