Mass 35. Hands Up. Hands Down.

Sunday 19 October 2025

It was the morning after my first Study Day in London, having started the Archbishop’s Certificate (”ArchCert”) in Southwark I’d signed up for.

I’d been on the early train for a 10am start, but walked the rest of the way through town from Victoria to St George’s Cathedral.

It felt early but already London was filling up, and Parliament square was teeming with tourists taking pictures of Big Ben, or Churchill, or the piper piping outside the Palace of Westminster.

The day started with a talk on the structure of the bible, then the Trinity, and finally the Kyrgma. In between there were chats with fellow students, with Father Mark who works at the University in Canterbury, and sandwiches.

I left with a head full of facts and faith, and eager to get started with the first assignment: A 200-word description of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

All important and serious. Which I was thinking about when Canon P, who had just preached about Moses, with his hands raised to the sky in prayer against the Amalekites, asked if anyone would like to volunteer as the Missio red box co-ordinator. I kept my hands down.
