Mass 23. A robbery

Sunday 10 August 2025

Our Lady Immaculate

There was news from the roof at the end of Mass today. The repairs were now half finished, but a few nights ago there had been a robbery.

Typical for trendy Whitstable the crime had a distinctive retro theme, with the lead piping being taken, to the surprise of everyone who assumed that was no longer a thing. But these theives, perhaps travelling all the way from the 1950s, didn’t care about that. Or didn’t until someone across the road spotted them and called the police.

They got away before being nabbed by the Old Bill, and are now likely far away planning a train robbery or some cattle rustling. But the lead is damaged beyond repair.

“God will forgive them,” said Canon P. “But I haven’t yet.”

We all laughed, grateful for the watchful neighbour, for the efforts of the roofers, and for the crime number.
