Mass 12. Pentacost

Sunday 8 June 2025

Our Lady Immaculate

Archbishop John was in Canterbury this morning for Mass. I thought about going but opted instead for the usual 8.30am service at home.

It was cold and breezy, but bright as I entered church. It seemed a little busier than normal, and I nodded at the people I have begun to recognise on my way to a seat behind a pillar on the left of the church facing the altar.

The yellow Easter ribbons had been replaced with the red of Penatcost, and a new red banner was hung on the wall.

Mass is taking on a slightly deeper meaning for me. The nature of it is changing. It’s nature, or significance has a greater effect. The Eucharist is one of many things I’ve found hard to explain to non-Catholics. Anglicans go to church on a Sunday. For Catholics, the option is there every day. And I’d go if I could. Attending Mass is not a habit, it’s a need.
