Mass 39: Sunday 9 November 2025

Remembrance Sunday and the Dedication of the Lataran Basilica

There were poppies everywhere in church for Remembrance Day. Each knitted and assembled in wreaths, or hung separately on the end of each pew. Bright blobs of red against the white walls.

The Dedication of the Lataran Basilica meant we heard about Jesus turning over tables in the temple. Familiar to us fans of the musical Jesus Christ SuperStar.

It might be the only time Christ is visibly angry, with the exception of chasing away demons. Maybe that’s what is behind the rest of us when we get angry. Trying to frighten demons. Usually our own.

I saw a bit of this later in the day waiting with a poorly friend in an observation ward at the QEQM hospital.

Waiting puts everyone on edge. Even more so when you’re waiting for the results of a test you had, and which could determine your health. Whether you’ll be going home that day, or whether the immediate future will be one of pain, medicine, and uncertainty.

Some people get cross. Some get mean. That prompts others to get mean in response. Or even a bit high and mighty. Others grumble, while others simply wish it would all go away.

If we were all to develop more patience would it remove anger from things? Easy to say. Not so easy to do. And overly simplistic even to say it.
