Mass 18. Travel worries

Sunday 6 July 2025

Our Lady Immaculate

The reading today was from Luke 10. We hear of the disciples, sent off in pairs to spread the gospel, heading in all directions. Not only that but they were told to take no money, no bag, not even extra sandals. They would just set off and see what happened.

The courage, and faith required is beyond me to imagine. What it did make me imagine was our family holiday, and how we will have bags with us, enough money (I hope), and plenty of sandals. We’ll also have flights and pre-booked accommodation at a destination we’re fully aware of. To say nothing of travel insurance.

I think a lot about our holiday, and the stress brought about by the planning. Booking tickets, timing departures, packing lists, arrival times. These logistics weigh heavily on my mind, which prefers order, stability, and home. Having to be at certain places by certain times, with certain luggage, and certain paperwork, can seem overwhelming.

I wonder whether stepping out with nothing but a walking cane might have its advantages. Perhaps I need to worry less about the journey. Perhaps I need more faith in the destination.
