I was late to my seat for Mass. Jan in the row in front turned to look at me with a smile.
“You’re late”, she grinned.
We’ve both become accustomed to arriving at church at the same moment. I said it was nice to be missed.
I had a good reason. I was being walked through how the food bank worked in the social center next door. A run-through of what goes where, so I could deliver groceries after Mass.
Becoming catholic is an experience that completely dismantles some of your pre-conceived ideas about the world. Delivering a food parcel does something similar. I drove away feeling like the recipient had helped me. They’d done me a favour.
Back home, I tried to fold the palm leaf I’d collected in church by myself. Then got help from a YouTube video giving palm leaf instructions to children.
