Mass 63. Ten days into Lent

Sunday 1 March 2026

I managed to catch up with some old RCIA friends last night. It had only taken us the best part of a year to arrange (must try harder), but we all picked up where we’d left off and had a great time together.

One thing struck me as refreshing, and a sign of how my life has changed in the past year. The ease with which we talked about Lent.

I’ve got used to Lent being extremely personal in the last couple of years, something my family sees me doing almost as if it were a diet (and to be fair, it usually involves cutting out cake).

But talking with fellow Catholics, we were each genuinely curious what we’d each given up. Everything from food and excessive music, to the opposite, trying to pray more, a rosary every day, or attending Mass more often.

And all of them younger than me, some much younger, and eager to talk about living a Christian life. And drink beer.
